About the Master of Architecture programme at SABE/TU Dublin
This site describes some of the recent work the M Arch at the School of Architecture, Building & Environment, TU Dublin. Outline information on the programme is given below. For further programme information, please follow the link at the end of this page.
Programme Ambition
Through a combination of studio and research modules, this RIAI-accredited, three-semester M Arch programme equips students to operate in the increasingly fluid worlds of architectural design, research and communication, and supports them to develop critical judgement and leadership for their future practice of architecture and architectural investigation.
Programme Structure
This three-semester, full-time programme centers around three distinct design research studio modules.
In SEMESTER 1, students take a Collaborative Design Studio module, unique to this programme, which sees them working in teams on a complex ‘live’ project, learning with internal and external design professionals to negotiate the complex interconnections between space, structure, service, environment and cost in the design of durable and sustainable buildings. The students are supported in this by a module in Whole Life Design, which provides the tools for examining the real, long-term consequences of building design and occupation. At the same time, the Architecture and Culture module introduced students through reading, seminar and spyposium to contemporary discourse - currently these include Architecture + Collectivity, Architecture + Technology, and Architecture + Landscape.
In SEMESTER 2, the students work on comprehensive design projects based on the thematic areas mentioned above. Each thematic unit is supported by external expertise, and the studio is engaged either local interest groups or external stakeholders (local authorities, for example). The studio work is underpinned by Research Methods, introducing students to modes of research through, for and into architecture. At the same time students are exposed through invited guests to diverse ways of practice in the Roles in the Professional Context module, equipping them to seriously consider their future roles as architectural practitioners.
In SEMESTER 3, students delve more deeply into research questions arising from their previous work, and use an agreed methodology (design or other) to produce design research folios such as the samples you will see on this website. In this the students were supported by the Research Studies and Electives modules.
Applications or Information
This RIAI-accredited programme is open for application to fourth year students of architecture from SABE as well as suitable candidates from other national and international architecture programmes. Further information on the programme is available at the end of this page.
